Han Solo was frozen in carbonite in The Empire Strikes Back as a test by Darth Vader to ensure the freezing process would not kill Luke Skywalker, whom Vader intended to transport to the Emperor. The process placed Han in suspended animation, allowing him to be safely transported as a bounty to Jabba the Hutt.
